GINA; Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act: What’s in your DNA?

DNA Database?

Last night I came across this reoccurring advertisement called 23&me clicking on the link I was taken to a website that promotes the use of DNA to find out “cool things” about your genetic history including distant long lost relatives along with possible illness you may have like Parkinson’s disease. Luckily for me I had a pair of “They Live” glasses on and what I saw was a way of collecting and data basing all public DNA which has been used to sentence people to death charging them with crimes based solely on genetic material found at the scene of a crime.  The genetic collecting industry is huge mainly focusing in on women trying to find out “who-the-bady-daddy-is” called paternity test. 23&Me sends you a spit kit and directions that show an awful lot of spit being sent to the company enough in fact to infect 1,000’s of possible crime scenes. Then I find the government has in place laws that protect against this very thing. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act was passed on May 21, 2008 and contains all the need laws to protect you against any company using this information about your genetic make-up to discriminate against you.  Here are the two titles laid out in the GINA act of 2008:
Spit Kit
Title I: Genetic Nondiscrimination in Health Insurance:
Title II: Prohibiting Employment Discrimination on the Basis of Genetic Information
If you take out the Non in the 1st title and the Prohibiting in the 2nd title you can better understand what these laws are designed to do. They make laws that sound great but after about a decade they end up amending the laws to mean the exact opposite.
